I became aware of a troubling situation that just occurred locally. Several seventh grade girls age 12 and 13 pulled a stunt without thinking about the consequences. Some girls their age had already did this at a nearby school. I don’t know the explanation about why the teachers did not know about this.

What was this dumb stunt? They took a portable pencil sharpener made of plastic and containing a razor blade and busted it to get the blade. Then each of them cut their wrist. These girls were some of the top students in their class.

This was not an attempted suicide stunt. They were just showing the girls from the other school that they were just as tough.

The principal of the school was required to report this incident to the proper authority, which I think is the school board. I don’t know the final decision but it will probably involve counseling and suspension for a couple of days.

The girls were in tears when the principal brought them to discuss the situation with them. They had not even thought about that sharing the same razor blade to cut themselves could cause them to get aids, hepatitis, or staff infection. If the school board requires it, then the girls must get professional counseling.

A couple of parents thought that the school over reacted. Some parents were really upset and are trying to figure out what to do for their girls.

Why did these girls do this? Are they making a statement? Do they need to be assigned more work at home? What recommendations do you have for these 12 and 13 year old girls and their parents?
