If you have just given birth for the first time, you realize that everything about your life could change drastically. When you were still single or at least married but without kids, you own your time. Your husband may demand some of those time but you can adjust things without any problems. You could still have time for friendships. Now, somebody else owns your time. You cannot even tell that little person to wait just a minute. That little tot depends on you for survival. The very thought of that can be frightening and exciting. Pressure at the office is nothing compared to this. ?You are constantly looking for parenting help just so you can also survive. Still, it would be healthy to maintain friendships. Here are some tips to do just that:
Keep in Touch
Just because you are busy does not mean that you should neglect your friends. Those with kids can actually even offer some parenting help. Also keep in touch with those who are not parents yet. It would not be fair not to do so. The communication can consist of something very simple, such as an email, a letter through snail mail, a phone call or a text. With today?s modern society, there are various modes of communication; you do not have to leave your home and your baby to show you care.
Take their Feelings in Consideration
There are times when you just feel like browsing parenting help forums, talking to moms who experiencing the same things. While it is good to make new friends, it would not be fair to leave old friends behind. When you do talk to friends who have not yet become parents, you should not alienate them by talking non-stop about your baby. You could, of course, talk about your baby?s latest achievements but proceed to topics that you can all relate to. If your friends want to know more about your baby then that would be the best time to start talking like your baby?s number one fan ? which you are.
Be Honest
Be honest about what your friends can expect from you. If you have decided to stay home with your baby, you could talk to your friends about their situation. Tell them that you like staying home. Maybe this is a far cry from what you were like before but your friends should learn to accept this new you, the devoted mom. If, however, you are planning to juggle work and being a mom, tell your friends that everything will be quite hectic from parenthood onwards. Talk about both the joys and hardships of being a new mom. Those who do not have kids yet will gain insight from your honesty.
Create Some Balance in your Life
While being a mom may be your favorite role now, you should go out with your friends sometimes. The going outs will no longer be as often and as regular as before, however. You just need some time with your friends and with a certain part of you.
It is possible to maintain friendships even when you are already a mom. Still, you should set your new priorities straight. The nights out will be fewer and far between but they are important in making your life well-balanced.
