The Twitter Phone for Toys for Tots…
I remember a game we all played as a child called “Telephone”. It started with one child whispering something in another child’s ear, that child would in turn repeat the saying in the next child’s ear, and so on, and so on, until finally the last child had to say what they heard.
We would all laugh about how messed up the message would be by the time it got around the room.
Well lately, the game of “Telephone” has been replaced with “Twitterphone” and the Motrin Moms controversy is proof that twitterphone has a lot more power than your average telephone. It can also be used for more than spreading gossip.
In most cases of “telephone” the message keeps getting bigger and bigger until it makes no sense, in the case of Twitter, thanks to it’s 140 characters, the message doesn’t seem to get quite as distorted but it does grow bigger and bigger and spreads faster and faster to all corners of the world.
“With great power comes great responsibility”, wise words from Spiderman’s uncle.
So what are we going to do with all this new found Twitter Power?
Sheryl Loch (@SherylLoch)from All About Health, Family and Fun has a good idea. After seeing the following Twitter message from friend Sharon McPhearson (@SharonMcP), Sheryl got right to work blogging about the plan and asking fellow Twitter Moms and blogging friends to do the same.
Hoping that Twitter moms can create the same type of impact in favor of Toys for Tots as they did against Motrin http://www.toysfortots.org
Toys for Tots is the wonderful organization that distributes donated new toys to children who might not otherwise get a gift for the Holidays.
Already the message has reached Twitter friends in Australia, Canada and Great Britain through the efforts of the ladies at the Secret Women’s Business Network (@SWBN).
Now here’s the part where you come in…..
- While you’re out shopping for your friends and family, stop and buy a new toy for a child in need.
- Drop off new unwrapped toys at your nearest Toys for Tots Drop-off.
- If there are no drop-offs in your area, you can make credit card donations at Toys for Tots
- Spread the word via Twitter using the #TFC (Toys for Christmas) symbol. This will help us get picked up in Twitter trends.
- If you are not on Twitter…. use the Telephone and spread the word (think of it as “juicy” gossip..)
- Blog about it or leave comments on blogs that blog about it.
I love the idea that we can make a difference in the lives of so many children if we just take the time to care.

I had not really thought of the Telephone game but, it is the a bit the same. We just have it easy because we can simply ReTweet.
I want to say Thank You for spreading the word about giving from the heart this season. We see so many families in need, we bloggers & Twits have the chance to brighten the lives of so many.
Having the girls of SWBN post their charities for Canada, Australia, and the UK have truly made this a world wide effort! I am sure we will soon be seeing other bloggers (and tweets) joining in with charities from their regions also.
Thanks,
Sheryl

Great article Nikki and thank you for helping to spread the word about this worthwhile cause. I can think of no other time in my lifetime when the help from Toys for Tots has been more needed.
I know if we had the Twitterverse buzzing with the Motrin meme, that we can do the same thing for something positive.
My hope is to see #TFC make it to the top of http://search.twitter.com trends and STAY there thru the month of December!
